Spot the milky way, planets and shooting stars

Sterrenkijken in Wadi Rum
āWhen was the last time you saw a sky full of stars? In Wadi Rum we are privileged to see this almost every night! We cannot wait to share this magical experience with you. We will create the best circumstances for you to stargaze. You can stargaze from the camp or cave. And we also offer a full stargazing experience with a professional astronomer (only available for groups).

Stargazing night tour
If you want to experience stargazing in a remote area, but still want the comfort of sleeping in the camp, then you can book a stargazing tour of 2 hours. After dinner, our local guide will take you on a stargazing experience in a remote area. Far away from the lights of the camps and the village. Lay down around the campfire on a mattrass under a warm blanket, with Bedouin tea and some sweets and just enjoy the silence and the view. Good chance you will spot a shooting star.

Stargazing at the cave

What better place to learn about astronomy, than right under the stars? This experience takes place in the remote White Desert, far away from light pollution. Our astronomer will take you on a journey through the sky where you will learn about the constellations, the zodiacs, the mythology behind them, the stars, and how to navigate them. They will take you deep into space and talk about nebulas, clusters, supernovas, galaxies, and the universe. You even have the chance to use the telescope to spot objects like the moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Andromeda and much more. It is a super interesting night where you learn a lot, but we will also have a lot of fun. You will definitely learn some new terms, but we will make sure that everything is explained in an easy way for everyone to understand it.

-
Moon: Look at the lunar cycle and the position of the moon. The stars are less visible when there is a full moon, because the light shines too brightly
-
Transparency: You need a clear sky without humidity and dust (in the wintertime there can be sandstorms in the desert)
-
Eyes: Let your eyes adapt to the dark. Take your time, close your torch, and don’t use your phone. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to get adjusted to the dark.
-
Red light: If you want to use a torch, use one with a red torchlight. And if you want to use your phone, activate the red screen.
-
Pollution: No light pollution. Look for a place in a remote area with no town or village close by.
-
Sun: Sun needs to be set. The evening is too early for the best stargazing experience, wait until night.
-
Season: Winter, spring and fall have longer and brighter nights. Cold nights usually have clear skies.
-
Stargazing app: If you don’t have an astronomer with you, download the Skyview app. It will show you popular stars and constellations, even when you are offline.
-
Meteor showers: Check the best dates for meteor showers, also taking into account the factors mentioned above.
